Saki is a Japanese high school student. One day during a vacation, she is talking with Bob, a high school student from the U.K. Bob is studying at Saki’s school.

Bob: Good morning, Saki. I haven’t seen you for a few days.
Saki: Good morning, Bob. I took part in a seminar.
Bob: Oh, really? What kind of seminar?
Saki: It was an English seminar for Japanese high school students. The ALTs working at high schools in Niigata teach us English. I joined it on Monday and Tuesday this week.
Bob: That was nice. Did you enjoy it?
Saki: I enjoyed using English by doing many kinds of things in a group. The ALT of my group was Mr. Brown. There were two other Japanese students in my group. Mr. Brown was so kind that we enjoyed communication in English very much. He was very cheerful, and we felt relaxed.
Bob: That’s good. What did you enjoy the most?
Saki: The presentation. After asking our ALT many questions about his hometown, we wrote the information on a large paper. Then, we showed the paper to all the students at the seminar and told them about his hometown in English. I felt nervous because I had to speak English in front of many students. But everyone listened to me very carefully and understood what I was saying in English, so I was very glad.
Bob: That was a good experience.
Saki: Yes. On the first day, I couldn’t understand Mr. Brown’s English. I had a lot of ideas to tell others, but it wasn’t easy for me to express them in English. I was sad.
Bob: I know how you felt.
Saki: Mr. Brown always said to me, “Great!” when I said something in English. I was happy to hear this word. On the second day, I began to understand what Mr. Brown said, and I was able to tell my ideas in English easily. Now I am studying English harder than before.
Bob: I had the same experience. When I first came to Japan, I couldn’t speak Japanese. But everyone was very kind and helped me. I have kept learning Japanese, and now I can enjoy talking with you in easy Japanese.
Saki: Yes. That’s true.
Bob: There is one Japanese word that I can’t forget. Do you know what it is?
Saki: No. What’s that?
Bob: It is daijobu. Some students worried about me, and said to me, “Daijobu?” because I didn’t talk to anyone at school. I didn’t know what it meant and asked them its meaning.

Laura: Hi, Emi. Look at this picture which I took when I visited a traditional house in a town yesterday.
Emi: Oh, I can see a set of hina dolls in the picture. How beautiful!
Laura: Yes. Look at other pictures. What do you think about these?
Emi: These are the pictures of many sets of hina dolls. Each set of hina dolls has its own features. The faces of the Empress dolls are not the same!

Miki: I did two kinds of volunteer activities.
